Oliveira do Hospital is a Portuguese city in the district of Coimbra, in the province of Beira Alta, Centro Region and sub-region of the Coimbra Region, with around 7,500 inhabitants and is the gateway to Serra da Estrela. It has been inhabited since prehistory, since megalithic remains abound in the municipality (namely in the parishes of Bobadela, Ervedal da Beira and Seixo da Beira).
In the 70s of the 20th century, evidence of what had been suspected for a long time was discovered: the Romans also colonized the area, since a Roman amphitheater was discovered in the parish of Bobadela.
During the Arab invasions, it is known that they were also in the municipality, since there is a Mozarabic church in the parish of Lourosa.
The Order of the Hospital of São João de Jerusalem, Rhodes and Malta, or just the Order of Malta, as it is better known today, had important possessions within the limits of this municipality, having several commendations here. This is why the municipal coat of arms bears the cross of the Order of Malta at the head.
